WELCOME to the Sunmeadow Alpaca farm located in the village of Putney in Southeastern Vermont. Settled in 1753, Putney remains to this day a lively rural community where travelers are welcome, where writers, artists and crafts people have traditionally found inspiration and support. Our alpaca farm is committed to breeding quality alpacas. We raise our alpacas to be friendly, loving and fun companions for the entire family.
 

We do not SELL alpacas, we facilitate ADOPTION. There is a significant difference. Selling is strictly a business transaction; a price is established through direct sales or auction, a buyer surfaces and the animal is purchased. The ADOPTION  process assesses, as a prerequisite to transfer of ownership, the recipient’s ability to provide an appropriate environment. Further, it verifies that the animals transferred through adoption will be integrated into a suitable family setting where love for animals can be clearly demonstrated and where life style enhancement is a clear objective. Alpacas that are SOLD, rather than ADOPTED, generally serve as a) herdsires, for farm or subcontracted breeding, or b) “show animals” to enhance marketability, or c) breeding females to replicate genetically conforming alpacas for subsequent resale.

Large farms often produce male crias that are unacceptable as show animals because they do not meet the strict conformation requirements demanded by the competitive market place. These animals are generally viewed as overhead and are sold as geldings.

Our adoption process works best with recipients who truly seek FAMILY ALPACAS for a long term association, rather than buyers who view the animals as a “business investment” where turnover and volume are key considerations.
